vsntranscoder server - Overview

Image for vsntranscoder server

The journalists’ rendering requests are sent to a networked computer, the vsntranscoder server. The server receives the rendering task requests, prioritizes or distributes them among various independent networked PCs that will perform the rendering tasks (the transcoder renderers).

All PCs are connected along a common physical medium: an Ethernet. Journalists will need to be working on vsnnews or vsnnetsharer terminals (these two applications work in conjunction with the Render Farm). From here rendering requests will be submitted to the computer in which the vsntranscoder server has been installed. The transcoder server will then distribute the requests among the various transcoder renderers, which will ultimately take care of the rendering tasks. Depending on quantity, the transcoder renderers may be installed on the same computer as the transcoder server or in a different one. Once the renderers have finished their job, they’ll register the clip in the location specified by the user. Clips can be registered either in sharer or in matic and news. Once the clip has been properly registered it is then ready for playout.

We are working in highly demanding environments where a single failure might imply our broadcast going to black. The service provided by the manufacturer of our equipment is a key factor in our choice. VSN has been giving us a great support service over the last 3 years so we have decided to put again in their hands the HD expansion of our channel and the installation of a new redundant playout system.
