vsnrender farm - Overview

A Render Farm (or Transcoder system) consists of a set of VSN applications that enable background rendering thus relieving journalists’ PCs from heavy local rendering tasks. Furthermore, a Render Farm also creates the proxy files that might be required by VSN applications such as VSNNETSHARER and VSNAUTOREC. This way, journalists will be able to focus their work on various clips while these are being processed remotely. A Transcoding system comprises a transcoder server and various transcoder renderers that can reside in the same machine as the server or anywhere in the network. Clients will also have to be installed in the users’ NLE software and the different vsn modules configured to take advantage of this system.

The journalists’ rendering requests will be submitted to a networked computer (the transcoder server). The server will receive the rendering task requests, prioritize or distribute them among various independent networked PCs that will perform the rendering tasks (the transcoder renderers). This way when a user has finished working on a project can send it to render to the transcoder system and start working on a new project without experiencing any slowdown on her computer. The same applies for any newly registered materials requiring a proxy file to be created. Thus, instead of adding a burden to the machine doing the capture or registration, the processing will take place somewhere else. As a consequence, the journalists PCs’ resources will be freed up so that journalists can focus on other tasks by avoiding the local rendering tasks’ long and tedious wait times.
