vsnarchive - Overview
vsnarchive is a Media Asset Management system with an advanced DAM (Digital Asset Manager) covering all aspects of ingest, catalogue, storage (whether it be on-line, near-line or off-line), browsing, tape management and distribution.
With vsnarchive you can digitise thousands of hours of low resolution video on-line, immediately available for browsing and previewing from any network terminal or through the Internet. The high-resolution materials can be stored in a near-line data tape robot or in off-line video tapes with bar-coded stickers. The bar-coding of off-line tapes allows the system to instantly identify the off-line tapes, their contents and other relevant information.
Cataloguing
Journalists can start pre-cataloguing the high-resolution clips which have been previously stored in the servers' hard drives. The cataloguing process is achieved through the use of templates; adding general metadata such as description, category, journalist, cameras, and keywords. It includes digital rights management (DRM) and partial cataloguing through segments within the same item.
Archiving
Cataloguers archive materials by organizing and organising them in categories for later nearline or offline storage. At the same time, vsnarchive generates a low resolution copy of the materials to be kept on-line permanently.
In off-line storage, the system keeps track of the tapes which are not full within a particular category in order to fill them up. If there are no tapes left with enough space for the recording, a new tape will be started and the system will generate a barcode sticker with the chosen format, including EBU-IBTN for tape identification.
Search
The searching module installed on the journalists' PCs allows complete searching the database for phrases and key words using logical conditions. Once found, users can preview the low resolution video files and mark IN and OUT points to ask the cataloguer only for the high resolution video segment needed.
Materials can be retrieved in one of three ways: asking for a loan of the original tape, a copy of the materials in a new tape or a copy of the materials in the server's hard drive. If material happens to be in near-line storage, it will be automatically brought on-line without the intervention of an operator. In the event that the material happens to be off-line' (on tape) vsnarchive automatically notifies the cataloguer the tape's identification code and its physical location. When the cataloguer introduces the tape into a VTR, the system automatically reads the barcode and intelligently brings on-line only the segment requested by the user.

Head of Technical Departmentla téléOur challenge was to create a fully HD automated new local television. The principal difficulty was to integrate all elements of the channel into one single software application, not too expensive, and distributed in Switzerland on time. Visuals Switzerland had the solution we were looking for: VSN. A coherent solution to optimize the production of our little TV station.
