Brazilian channel Rede Minas acquires a VSN’s PAM/MAM/Automation system

The TV station, owned by the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, has acquired a modern platform for contents management based on VSNSPIDER that integrates PAM/MAM, deep archive for 70 concurrent users, a 32 TB centralized storage, a LTO6 50 slots robotic library, 2 drives, and a news automation system with 4Ch In and 4Ch Out.

From 2011, Mina Gerais’ most important station started a detailed process to study and select a technology provider that could develop a turnkey project to digitize and automate the process of shared edition, storage, studio automation, tape historical contents digitization, customized cataloguing and deep archive in a robotic library LTO6. Rede Minas ended choosing VSN as the unique provider for the entire process.
VSN detected that there were special requirements, such as the chance of adding a format transcoding system capable of unifying the standard of contents from different origins and creating files with low resolution for simultaneous preview, and a cataloguing system with customizable metadata according to each department’s needs. “This made us not only develop a project with our owned products, but to integrate third-parties solutions such as Harmonic’s Carbon Coder, Adobe Premiere, SGL for library control, etc. to offer a complete end-to-end workflow”, declared Roberto Calmon, from Video Systems, VSN’s Brazilian dealer.
“After several visits to other Brazilian TV channels that use our solutions, after analysing our project, after showing our solutions to the users, engineers, managers and owners of the channel, the proposal that best suited their needs in a competitive prize was ours”, explains Mario Díaz Becar, VSN´s sales director for Latin America.
Luis Meireles, Rede Minas’ Engineering Director, added that “the prize was undoubtedly decisive, as well as the characteristics of the distributed processing, the easy-to-use interface, the workflow management, the archive and the partial retrieval of electronic media”.
The ambitious project needed a Production Asset Manager (PAM) capable of integrating with a XDCAM workflow and almost 30 Adobe Premiere CS6. It had to transversely provide service to all the production environment, including the news system, promotions, programming and archive. For this purpose, the VSNEXPLORER PAM/MAM platform was implemented with 70 concurrent licences, that run on the VSNSPIDER Central Server architecture in redundant configuration, in charge of generating customizable workflows. A 32TB VSN Storage Server system with redundant access 10GbE Gateway servers and a VSN Archive deep archive system that controls 50 slots and 2 drives LTO6 robotic library managed by SGL broadcast, with whom VSN has several installations in Latin America.
For the news broadcasting environment a 4Ch In/Out VSN VMAX video servers platform with 16TB of dedicated storage for broadcasting was installed, all managed by VSNMULTICOM PLAY and VSNMULTICOM REC broadcasting and ingesting automation systems. The client also needed an ingesting park that could allow the company to digitize all the historical archive stored in hundreds of videotapes, from U/MATIC to Betacam. “For this, we must count with advanced cataloguing options that allowed us to execute several simultaneous processes, such as Quality Control, contents validating or sending to robotic library, among others, that are totally and satisfactory covered with VSN’s implemented system”, says Díaz Becar.
“The post-sales support has been excellent, as expected. All the professionals that have participated in the selection and choosing the system agree on recommending VSN’s MAM/Archive system. It is easy to use, friendly, and very intuitive”, adds the executive.
