Seven steps to create your linear TV Channel

Creating your own linear tv channel might seem complicated, but it’s not. We all think about a process with many technical procedures and different systems involved: Playout automation software, graphic systems, transcoding… etc. But the truth is that we can deliver all the operations to start broadcasting with an individual software: a Channel in a Box.

If you want to learn how to create your linear TV channel, in this article you will discover how to manage the seven necessary steps to do so with just one tool: VSNOne TV

.

1.  Ingest, the first step to create your linear TV Channel

Once we have video content to get into the air (whether it’s live or recorded), the first logical step would be to ingest it into our system, a term that in video production refers to its processing into a studio or facility. Ingestion can be done via conventional video, compressed data streams or data files, and the media is usually stored on a server.

If we want to create our linear TV Channel successfully, we must count on a system like VSNOne TV, a channel in a box that allows manual or automated ingest of SDI, IPTS, DVB-ASI, NDI or webcast signals. It allows the ingest of a wide variety of SD, HD and UHD files and also supports P2 and SxS cards.

2.  Transcoding: it’s all about the format

On more than one occasion, ingested content will not be in the ideal format for broadcasting, so it will be necessary to transcode it, in other words, convert it from one video format to another in order to increase the number of compatible target devices on which it can be played.

VSNOne TV allows the creation of proxies and transcodes to a wide variety of formats and codecs, and also includes an integrated rules-based file transfer system to multiple storages.

3.  Schedule your Playout

Once all the content is available, we must arrange it according to the order in which we want it to be broadcasted: choose the best time to air it, the advertising breaks we want to introduce and every other variable we need to consider.

VSNOne TV is a channel in a box that includes all the functionalities of a playout automation software. It also allows the creation of broadcast lists or file import and integrations with Broadcast Management Systems like VSNCrea, and enables introducing changes in the lists while they are being executed.

4. Graphics for your linear TV Channel

Adding graphics is crucial if we want to create a TV channel. We can identify many examples where they play a critical role: the weather information, programming announcements, a logo or advertising inserts. There are many occasions where we will need to overprint graphics on the contents.

VSNOne TV functionalities go beyond those of a simple playout automation software. This channel in a box system allows to feature graphic compositions that can include multiple layers of text, logos, animations, video clips, chroma key and other elements.

5. Broadcast: deliver the content to your audience

Broadcasting is the transmission of the channel signal from its origin to the audience by means of different types of signals. Naturally, it is the most critical process of the operation as, if it were to fail, our viewers wouldn’t be able to watch our content.

With VSNOne TV we can forget this problem when we create our lineal TV channel. It manages from 1 to 6 SD/HD or 4 UHD broadcast channels and allows simultaneous broadcasting via multiple signals and simulcast (multiple simultaneous broadcasts).

6. Monetization of your TV Channel

Although there are initiatives that do not seek economic profit, almost all linear channels are financed through advertising, mostly defined in the form of advertising spaces. We all know how the advertising model is changing and how important it is to have allies in order to get the most out of our content.

VSNOne TV allows local insertions in the video or IP signal from a central station following the SCTE-35/104 standards to, for example, dynamically insert commercials or regional news in a newscast and improve the monetization of our linear channel.

7. Monitoring: Ensure everything is OK

If the above processes have been adequately completed, all that remains is to ensure that they continue this way by monitoring the channel’s broadcasting to guarantee good continuity and allow a rapid response to any unexpected eventuality.

VSNOne TV is accessible from any web browser, and also includes a customizable Multi-Viewer for easy and convenient monitoring of all on-air signals.
